Ruth Ben-Ghiat is a historian, educator and commentator on fascism, authoritarian leaders and propaganda. She is Professor of History and Italian Studies at New York University and an Advisor to Protect Democracy. She writes for CNN and other media outlets, and her latest book, “Strongmen: From Mussolini to the Present,” which was published by Norton in 2020, examines the authoritarian playbook illiberal leaders have used for a century. Her Substack newsletter, Lucid, examines threats to democracy and how to counter them. Follow her on Twitter @ruthbenghiat.
